Key findings of the study
- OTAs dominate AI sources: Tripadvisor, Booking.com, and Expedia were the top three sources cited.
- Branded properties are a clear winner: These properties had 4.43 percentage points more visibility than independent hotels.
- Strong reputation is essential: All properties that are recommended maintain excellent guest ratings, high review volume across major platforms and an average sentiment score (75 out of 100) of all the properties.
- Digital presence is important The AI-recommended properties were 98% on YouTube, 97% on travel blogs and 95% on Reddit. This shows that AI is interested in a wide online presence.
The study was conducted using AI monitoring tools across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini – platforms that collectively account for an estimated 98% of AI-driven website traffic. Researchers examined citation patterns, sentiment analyses, and digital footprints for consistently high-performing properties in order to identify key factors that influence AI recommendations.
