The city is filled with environmentally-friendly events and activities on this special day. It’s not only a way to stay cool but also a great idea to extend the summer beyond July 4. The events include stand-up paddle board lessons, community kayaking and picnics. Browse the webpage for more information. What is City of Water Day?
City of Water Day has been going on for 18 years. According to its organizers it is an outdoor all-day event meant to “champion New York as a climate resilient city and New Jersey harbor.” Put on by Waterfront Alliance You can also find out more about the following: New York–New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP), a series of events will be held in all five boroughs plus New Jersey, Westchester and Rockland County. Aquatic offerings will abound all day long—from beachcombing and boating, to birdwatching and even live concerts.

City of Water Day is celebrated in the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester County, Rockland County, New Jersey, and other places.
Participation
All events on City of Water Day are free to attend. Because many of the events are organized independently by communities, participants might have to register in advance—be sure to do your research and read the website or social media tied to each event before showing up.
Standout events
Flood Protection in Lower Manhattan: A Walking Tour of the Financial District & Seaport Climate Resilience Plan
New Yorkers will be able to learn more about the city’s climate-related disaster preparedness at Seaport Pier 17 between 2:00 and 3:00 pm.
Jamaica Bay Festival
The 8th Annual Jamaica Bay Festival runs from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The family-friendly free palooza is taking place in Queens. Brooklyn, with 30+ activities at various locations encircling Jamaica Bay—which can be found on the map featured in the link. Free kayaking, fishing and surfing will be available, as well as hiking, bird-watching, art, yoga and more. Check out the highlights, such as the beach party and music live at Rockaway Beach Brooklyn Floyd Bennett Field will be hosting stand-up paddleboard classes, as well as 97th concessions.
Saltwater fishing at Greenpoint’s Transmitter Park
This summer, you can enjoy the city and the outdoors. Urban park rangers in Greenpoint will be teaching New Yorkers to fish from 10:30 am to noon at Transmitter Park. The participants will learn the proper way to hold a fishing pole, how ethically to fish, and information about nearby waterways. It is recommended for children aged 8 and above. Registration is not required.
Waterfalls of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park
Are you curious about the natural beauty of Brooklyn’s unofficial back yard? The Urban Park Rangers will take you on a guided walking tour to see the waterfalls, their infrastructure and the picnic house in Prospect Park at 1:00pm (on West Drive & Fifth Street). Registration is not required.
