    China’s Hotel Construction Pipeline Sees Slight Dip. Upscale Chain-Scale Projects are at an All-Time High

    The Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend report for China Lodging Econometrics The Chinese construction pipeline (LE) shows 3,704 projects/670 185 rooms for Q1 of 2025. The pipeline has slightly declined from its peak in Q3 of 2024. LE also points out that the number of upscale, chain-scale project in China has reached its highest ever total. 

    Construction Pipeline – Current Status

    China will have 2,752 construction projects (490,897 room) completed by the end of Q1 2020. In the next 12 month, 316 additional projects/55.287 rooms will be completed, while 636 other projects/124.001 rooms are currently in the planning stage. The total number of projects in the pipeline has decreased slightly compared to Q3 2024.

    Construction Starts in Hotels

    The number of projects in China that started construction in Q1 was 237. This is a 13% rise in projects and an 16% increase in the rooms as compared to Q4 of 2024. The number of hotel renovations and conversions has also risen to 189 projects/34 797 rooms. This is a 12% increase in projects from the previous year.

    Upscale Chain Scale projects Reach New Heights

    The report indicates that upscale chain scale projects have reached a new high of 1,043 project/223,499 room, which is an increase of 11% for projects and 5% for rooms YOY. This combined with 1,161 chain-scale projects and 177,644 room pipeline, which is the largest in China, account for 60%.

    Leading Cities in Hotel Construction

    Chengdu is China’s leader in hotel construction, with 145 project/25,898 room. Shanghai comes next with 131 projects/24.733 rooms. Guangzhou is third with 119 project/24.384 rooms. Hangzhou and Xi’an are next with 96 and 89 project respectively.

    New Hotel Openings

    In Q1, China opened 144 new hotel rooms/21 797 in the first quarter. In Q2 and Q4 of 2025, an additional 1,009 hotels will be opened. LE analysts predict 1153 new hotels/173.704 rooms by the end 2020. In 2026, 765 new hotel rooms/133,332 are predicted to be opened.
