Calabria, tucked between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, is Italy’s best-kept secret. This is a land of dramatic coasts, ancient ruins and hilltop villages. It also has untouched natural beauty. Calabria is one of Italy’s lesser-known regions, and it makes for an immersive cultural experience that can be enjoyed over a period of five to seven days. Calabria is home to some of Italy’s most interesting towns.

    Tropea

Villa Paola at Tropea looks out over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Beginning your stay at the town of Tropea. The best place to stay in is Villa PaolaFormer convent from the 16th Century, it is surrounded with a Mediterranean Garden and offers a view of the white beaches of the Costa degli Dei. The region is known for its signature dishes, such as Tropea onions and spicy nduja spread.

It’s not difficult to reach Reggio Calabria from Tropea. Visit the Museo Nazionale della Magna Greca to see the Bronzes of Riace. They are some of the best preserved and most important examples of classical Greek art. The Bronzes of Riace were found by local fishermen in 1972 as they retrieved their nets. End the day with a glass of local wine from the Cirò region at one of Reggio Calabria’s famous cafes on Lungomare Falcomatà, its elegant waterfront overlooking Sicily. Aspromonte National Park is one of the three main national parks in Calabria. The other two are Sila and Pollino.
