    Brazilians Have a Life-saving Reason for Applauding On Beaches—and It’s Spreading Across South America

    In Brazil, beachgoers are known to clap in support of a separated child. The practice is very common in South America. This can also happen at large gatherings like Carnival.

    Whincup said that it is a “super Brazilian thing” to do when a child becomes separated from its parents. 

    He explained that “the clapping, to my knowledge, indicates where the child’s location is.” “For instance, if the kid is here, then people will clap.” The parent may think, “Wait, my child has gone missing. Where is he?” “Oh, I hear clapping. Let’s go there.”

    Whincup’s video also received a lot of support from the public in the comments.

Everyone got down and began clapping,” explained a commenter, while several others gave similar examples. “I had never seen anything like this and I was so moved when I witnessed it. “I thought it was gorgeous.” 

    Whincup finished his video saying, “It is such a tiny thing, I have never seen it on any beach on this planet.” It’s one of the many little Brazilian things which are super, super cool. It’s something we could all use and learn from around the world.
