WalletHub released its list of top sports cities for the United States in November. The rankings were based on a total score calculated based upon the percentage of Americans who claimed to be sports fans. Football (which accounted 60 percent for the total weight), Baseball (14 percent), Basketball (13 percent), Soccer (7 percent), and Hockey (6 percent) were all included.
The team also added that “each sports category was graded on 100-point system, with 100 being the best score for sports fans.” The team added that “we calculated each city’s overall score by calculating its weighted average of all sports categories and then used the scores to rank our sample.”
Boston is the clear winner of the Best Large City and Best Overall categories.
WalletHub reported that “Boston is the best city for sports this year, thanks to its appreciation of all kinds of sports, proximity to stadiums and arenas, and strong support of professional sports teams.” Fenway Park is one of the most notable venues, along with TD Garden and Gillette Stadium. Boston has professional teams in various sports, such as one team each for the NBA and MLB.
Boston was ranked as the second best city for basketball lovers thanks to the Celtics. It’s also a “strong soccer city, with the New England Revolution providing an established presence in Major League Soccer, and nurturing a dedicated fanbase.” The Red Sox are the city’s fifth-best baseball team, while the Patriots, located right around the corner, make it the fourth-best football team.

Green Bay, Wisconsin won the award for the best mid-sized city for sports enthusiasts, “with its deeply rooted sports culture highlighted by the Green Bay Packers,” WalletHub reported. “The city’s enthusiastic football fans are known as well as its passion for the local game. They rank the city third in the nation for football cities.”
Clemson in South Carolina was rated the best small city by WalletHub for sports enthusiasts. “Clemson University’s athletic programs are very strong, and its football team is extremely successful.” Clemson has won 15 ACC championships and three national titles since 1978. They have a large capacity stadium and very engaged fans,” the report said. “As a consequence, Clemson ranks 29th overall among the best football cities“Despite not having a NFL team.”
