American Airlines recently announced an expanded winter schedule, with new routes from its Chicago O’Hare International Airport hub to popular vacation destinations including St. Croix (STX) and San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO).
The airline will also increase flight frequency to existing routes in Aruba (AUA), Cancun, Mexico (CUN), Curacao (CUR), Grand Cayman Islands (GCM), Los Cabos, Mexico (SJD), and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (PVR).
Although the route announcement occurred on May 2, passengers won’t be able to book tickets or see the flight schedule until May 5.
The new flight frequencies and added destinations are the biggest flight expansions for any American hub so far this year, according to the airline. “As we get our first taste of spring in Chicago, we are already looking ahead to giving our customers a reprieve from the bitter Midwest winter with more than double the flights to popular vacation spots,” Ben Humphrey, American Airlines vice president of Chicago (ORD) operations, shared in a statement with Travel + Leisure.
The airline is also expanding its domestic route network from Chicago, which can provide access to more destinations for more travelers. For example, American will launch a new twice-daily service on Oct. 6 from Akron/Canton, Ohio (CAK), which serves communities outside of Cleveland, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The airline will also increase flights from Roanoke, Virginia (ROA) during the peak holiday season.
