In the western mountains, a less-known area deserves the same attention. Allegany County, located about three hours south of Washington, D.C., is full surprises, including scenic mountain views, an expanding craft brewery scene, charming small towns, and its own ice-cream trail.

This part of the state is a great escape, but it’s still close to home. Allegany County is the perfect blend of small-town charm and outdoor adventure. It offers hiking, biking and local beer. Cumberland, and Frostburg are two of Allegany County’s major hubs. Both offer vibrant downtowns with easy access to parks and trails.

You’ll find it here if you’re looking to take a roadtrip or weekend getaway that’s off the beaten trail. Allegany County, Maryland is one of those places you wonder how it hasn’t received more attention.

How to get There

Allegany County, Maryland is conveniently located about 2.5 hours away from Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C., so it’s a great destination for anyone coming from anywhere.

I would recommend renting a vehicle at one of the major airports. The drive is scenic, quick and easy. The drive is beautiful. I have driven through the D.C. region myself. You’ll be excited even before you reach your destination.

Before you go, know what to expect

Allegany County may be a little more remote than expected, so it’s best to bring your own car. It is only a few hours away from major cities and offers a small-town atmosphere. Recently renovated downtown Cumberland now offers great Wi-Fi. Cell service, however, can be patchy in certain areas, particularly in state parks and on the trails. To be safe, download maps before you go.

Pack for an active destination. As you’ll be spending most of your time hiking, biking, visiting scenic overlooks, exploring park or relaxing outside, you won’t require anything extravagant. Good walking shoes and comfortable clothing will help you a lot.

Allegany County’s strong sense community and pride in the locality is something I really enjoy. There aren’t many large chains in Allegany County; the majority of businesses here are family-run, from breweries to restaurants, small shops to farmers markets. The locals are friendly and know each other, so you shouldn’t be surprised when someone asks about your hometown. It’s part of the welcoming atmosphere that makes this area special.

The Best Time to Visit

Casey McCagh is the head brewer of 1812 Brewery. He said: “The best season to visit Allegany County would be from Memorial Day until late fall. DelFest is a bluegrass music festival that we host Memorial Day Weekend to kick-off the season. Then in summer, there’s great hiking, biking and rafting. And during the fall we get to see the beautiful changing leaves and enjoy the beauty of the mountains.

I agree. Allegany County was beautiful in the fall. The crisp, comfortable weather made it perfect for enjoying the fall colors, drinking beer with friends and spending time outdoors.

What to Do in Best Things to See

Take a hike.

Allegany County is a wonderful place to hike. There are many scenic trails in the area thanks to several state parks. McCagh also noted that hiking in state parks was one of his favourite ways to enjoy the county.

Cumberland’s downtown has been revitalized.

Cumberland’s historic downtown is now more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly and exciting than ever. Baltimore Street is the centerpiece of this project. It has been completely redesigned with new lighting, landscaping and infrastructure.

Take your time to explore the local shops, galleries and boutiques that line the streets. You’ll be able to find everything you need, from cozy cafés and ice-cream parlors to lively bars and restaurants. You can enjoy a craft drink, shop for unique souvenirs or just take a leisurely stroll in downtown Cumberland.

Allegany County is a great place to visit if you are interested in local history and museums. Allegany Museum is one of my favorites. George Washington Camp Headquarters and Frostburg Museum are also great. Each one offers a fascinating look into the rich past of the area through interesting artifacts.

Restaurants and Places to Drink

1812 Brewery

I am a sucker of good craft beers and outdoor seating. 1812 Brewery checks both boxes. The prices are great, they often have live music and bring in rotating food trucks. The atmosphere is what makes this place stand out. While the beer was excellent, my personal favorite is the Blood Orange Horizon. The rustic charm of the barn in which it is housed and the family-owned atmosphere make it a place you’ll enjoy as much as the beer.

Corner Tavern & Cafe

McCagh revealed that this tavern was one of his favourite places to eat in the area. “They offer excellent coffee and breakfast as well as house-smoked hams for delicious sandwiches.”

Sand Springs Saloon & Steakhouse

This family-owned steakhouse—known for its mouthwatering steaks, savory cornbread, and fresh crab cakes—is a fantastic choice for dinner. The food is excellent, but the service will make it a memorable experience.

D’Atri Restaurant

This relaxed spot Blends American and Italian flavours to create delicious subs. Their cheesesteak, in particular, is legendary. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner. However, their sandwiches are best enjoyed at lunch.

Patrick’s Pub

If you like classic bar foods and a fun atmosphere, Patrick’s This is a great choice. This is the perfect place to watch a game while enjoying pot pie, French dip, and zucchini fries.

Cumberland

Cumberland, also known as “Queen City”, is a city rich in charm and history. The downtown revitalization is a walkable area with restaurants, boutiques, and cozy cafés. The city is relaxed and friendly, with a vibrant craft beer scene.

Frostburg State University is located in this lively mountain town that blends Appalachian culture with youthful energy. You can either hop on the bus to explore Main Street’s eclectic shops, colorful murals and local restaurants or stroll down Main Street. Allegany County’s easiest way to travel is by car. Amtrak serves the area but having your own vehicle allows you to explore the hiking trails and scenic byways, visit breweries at your leisure, and enjoy the scenic views. You won’t be reliant on public transport, which makes your trip more flexible.
