Romeo Roma is a unique and special place. That’s partly thanks to Zaha Hadid—there’s Carrara marble honed into bold curves, Makassar ebony, and a design reminiscent of a spaceship from the future. The 16th-century palace where the ancient artifacts, like the marble head belonging to Augustus’ wife Livia Drusilla were found is also the setting for the show. A few steps from Piazza del PopoloOn Via di Ripetta some of these 74 rooms are futuristic. Others have original frescoes, which contrast with the modern bathrooms, and the warmth provided by the Krion (the white material used to make the freestanding tubs located in the center of each room). Alain Ducasse’s restaurant is the first big experiment by the French chef since the opening of his sister hotel in Naples. It’s also the only part of this property that’s open to the general public. The hotel is introducing a membership program for access to the gym, spa and other common areas. Monsieur’s platter of artichokes and oysters isn’t the only thing that wins. He also gets a win with puntarelle. Rome, but also with breakfast, a spread of rare refinement, prepared à la minute at the table. Try the fluffy and splendid omelet.
