Borgo Valle Rita lies on the border between Puglia & Basilicata just a few km from the Ionian Sea. It is a sprawling family-owned farm of 103 hectares. It was purchased in 1972 by Pasquale, and today, after three generations, is overseen by Carlo Lunati and Antonella, his granddaughter, who have given this estate a vibrant new life. The property is named after the Rita stream. An ancient palm grove leads to a rustic 14th century manor, restored by Milan-based architect Anna Mazzucchelli. In order to preserve its historical importance, local materials such as “tufo Pugliese”, were used. These were paired with simple furnishings from local artisans. The 15 rooms, apartment and villas are all unique in their design. The restaurant is housed under an elegant barrel vaulted ceiling. You can enjoy a farm to table style menu, curated by chefs who celebrate Apulian Heritage through a season menu that combines traditional recipes with modern culinary techniques. The hotel also offers a swimming-pool with breathtaking views of the valley, a tenniscourt, and three hiking and mountain biking trails. Classic and electric bikes are available to guests for free.
Palazzo Presta, Gallipoli
Palazzo Presta in Gallipoli’s Old Town is where 17th Century grandeur meets global travellust. Antonio and Eugenia, a powerhouse Apulian couple, acquired the property that was once owned by Giovanni Presta, a doctor of the Enlightenment era who was considered to be the best in southern Italy. Studio Atelier P, the Italian architectural company, and the owners of this boutique have reimagined the world with ten unique styled rooms. Palazzo Presta has many other rooms that will keep you entertained. Our favorite hideaway, the Libreria Del Mare library, is a collection of books that tells Salento’s story. You may be able to find a hidden speakeasy among the books. Before dinner, you can enjoy a cocktail at Terrazza Laurus’ rooftop bar, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. After sundown, head downstairs to Lazzaro & Caterina, the in-house restaurant that reinvents local classics with gourmet flair. Gallipoli, a nearby city, offers a wide range of activities. From strolling along the coastline to exploring the historic centre, splashing about at Punta Pzzo or Lido di San Giovanni and watching the sunset on the Bastioni, there are many options.
