A 1.31-square mile lake is not a large body of water by most international standards. Not only is Lake Sørvágsvatn The largest in the Faroe IslandsIt also causes visitors to question their perspective quite literally because an optical illusion makes it appear that the body of water “floats” above the ocean.

Located on Vágar, one of the 18 islands that makes up the Danish archipelago between Iceland and Scotland, the lake sits relatively calmly among the rolling green hills that lead to dramatic rock formations.

You’ll understand the nickname “the Lake Above the Ocean” if you get the angle right. This nickname is probably accurate, as the waters of the lake do reach the Atlantic Ocean. What’s so mind-boggling is that the way the viewpoint comes together to make it appear as though Lake Sørvágsvatn, also known as Leitisvatn, is truly hovering above the sea.

Like Firefall in YosemiteHorsetail Waterfall is a waterfall that looks like it is flaming when the sun reflects off of it. Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni Faroe Islands visual tricks are all about angles and sightlines.

At the end of the lake is a 98.4-feet-high waterfall called Bøsdalafossur running over the edge to the Atlantic Ocean, almost like nature’s version of an infinity pool. Geituskoradrangur, a sea stack that is visible from the same angle as the falls, adds to the drama.

It is a short hike from the viewpoint to the summit. trail that takes between 45 minutes to an hour to reach Trælanípa mountain. At the main gate, near the trailhead, there is a fee booth.

Although the paths will give you a feeling of being completely immersed in nature, they are actually close to the island necessities. It is about a five minute drive from Vagar Airport The trailhead is adjacent to the village. Miðvágur.
