Sierra Nevada adventures, Spain
Sierra Trails, run by Dallas Love and her brother, Mordecai, based in Bubión, two hours’ drive from Málaga, offers exceptional village-to-village rides in the Sierra Nevada. Dallas paired us up with Spanish horses trained to ride across varied terrain. We stopped for picnics under trees, and stayed at lovely family-run accommodations. After a day of riding, we enjoyed a relaxing hot bath followed by delicious meals and wine. It was a real treat. Five nights’ accommodation with four full days riding, including pick up from Málaga airport, was €1,465.

Exmoor Hill escorted rides are a great way to explore the Exmoor hills
Burrowhayes Farm campsite A family-friendly camping site is located near Porlock, in the north-west Somerset area. It’s on the edge the stunning Horner Wood. The location is great and we have visited several times. We love horse riding and the location. There are a variety of horses and ponies available for escorted rides through the Exmoor Hills. Even our oldest, who has years of experience riding, enjoyed a challenging and fun ride. From £35 an hour for an escorted ride; camping pitches from £19 a night.

Enjoy unforgettable rides in the heart of Bordeaux
Enjoy a day of fun and excitement as you gallop along the endless beaches in the south of Bordeaux, with a professional photographer on hand. Ride through dunes and shady forests and cool off in the sea and pool at your comfortable chalets. Unicorn Trails’ Atlantic coast trek (eight days from €1,439) made for a holiday of a lifetime for my 16-year-old daughter. All day long, it was about horses and riding. But there was also time for riverside picnics and evening meals. The camaraderie among a diverse and dusty group of riders, and their expert guides, was crucial to an unforgettable and exciting week.

New Forest Roaming Tour
Horses and ponies have privileges in the New Forest Due to ancient laws which protect the rights of animals to roam free and for commoners. Last summer, our riding holiday was a great way to discover the trails, forests and open land in this beautiful area. I was based with the friendly, helpful Burley Villa Riding School, which rents out ponies or horses with a guide for £99 for a couple of hours. As horses have the right of way in many cases, riding was a relaxing way to explore the countryside. There are plenty of watering holes – for man and beast – such as the White Buck in Burley. One tip: Get the New Forest Card for just £10 to access discounts at shops, pubs and cafes – for riders and roamers.

Walking through Central Spain
I rode in the western Sierra de Gredos with Jerebeque TrailsThis is run by Emilio Mamen. It was a five-day journey through a variety terrains in rural central Spain, including mountains, villages and farms. Emilio was the one who made this trip unique. He is next-level in his knowledge of the area, and the training of his horses … they don’t even use bits. I was perfectly matched with one of the horses he had, and that made it even better. You should be specific about what kind of horse and experience you are looking for.

Winning tip – a gallop through the Peak District
Northfield Farm‘s two-day ride (£400pp inc lunch and transfers) offers fantastic variety in the Derbyshire Dales. The first day’s ride crosses the Monsal Dale viaduct, and then continues through an ex-railway tunnel. As the echoes of hooves echo, it is spine-tingling. After lunch at Edensor it’s on to the next part of your journey. Haddon Hall And a gallop in Chatsworth park. Think period dramas, but without the dresses. The day two of the festival is spectacular. High Peak Trail Staffordshire Moorlands. The horses and guides are unflappable and the terrain is varied.
