Mama’s Too
Upper West Side, West Village
You can also find out more about us on our website. Mama’s Too The coterie of trendy West Village I was introduced to the New York cult by the original restaurant in Manhattan. Upper West Side That’s the direction I want you to go. The UWS is a relatively “meh”, corner in terms of the city’s food offerings. It was desperate for a neighborhood hero, like Mama’s Too. Frank Tuttolomondo, the founder of Mama’s Too, was destined to become a pizzaiolo. After all his grandmother Maria Nina had opened the original Mama’s Pizza The original was released in 1959. You could pay homage to the original but this is one instance where the modern-day remake blows tradition away. The slices at Mama’s Too have been featured in our UWS guide as well as our story on New York City’s most iconic foods, it bears saying thrice: airy Roman dough that crisps up like a cookie around the edges serve as the perfect foundation to sop up intense flavor combos like the Angry Nonna, Tuttolomondo’s tribute to grandma that includes hot Sopressata, Calabrian chili oil, and aged mozz, or my personal favorite, the poached pear pie—its marriage of crumbly, creamy gorgonzola with bites of pear right on the edge of dissolve is nothing short of divine. —Kat Chen
Turbo Pizza
Bushwick
What’s Nice about Turbo Pizza In Bushwick, it is a pizza restaurant that serves both functions.dive bar. I would say “quasi-” for the second, because despite its casual, yet stylish, interior, and pool tables, it is too new, too nice, and has a cocktail program which is too thoughtful. Pizza is the name of the restaurant, it’s what they serve and it is delicious. The pizza is Detroit-style – a rarity in this area. It is rectangular, with a thick, airy crust. But the best part are the golden shards that cling to the sides, like jagged stalagmites. Menu options are varied and customizable. The usual cheese and pepperoni is available, but also riffs like the Billy Boy, which includes goat cheese, prosciutto and sesame seeds with hot honey. The fact that there is a delicious wedge salad on the menu to brighten the plate, is the icing. —Charlie Hobbs
Williamsburg Pizza
Williamsburg, Bushwick Lower East Side Upper East Side
If you have a friend visiting from out-of-town and they are looking for authentic New York style pizza, Williamsburg Pizza I would recommend this place. This counter-service restaurant is located in South Williamsburg. The place is charming and unpretentious, and the slices are delicious and fresh. There are many options, including those with satisfyingly crispy crusts and chewy insides. What’s my suggestion? For a true Brooklyn taste, opt for the thick and buttery Grandma pie. [Editor’s note: You’ll also find their slices in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy under the name “Brooklyn Pizza Crew”.] —Jessica Chapel
