Jacob tells Bella the first time about “Cold Ones” while Bella and her friends are on a road trip. This trip, as well as the legends she hears there, is a key element in the rest the series. It also plays a crucial role in the development of Bella’s friendship with Jacob and vampire interest. This is also the last (and first) time she truly bonds with her friends before drifting away.
