The East Coast is a great place to be in the fall. There are many places that claim to have the most deciduous trees or the most vibrant colors. But very few can match the feeling of the East Coast in the fall. fall in New England.
Unknowingly, during a recent East Coast visit, I found myself on the Kancamagus HighwayThe Kanc is a local term. Unaware that it is one of the most beautiful and iconic drives in New England—and arguably, the nation—I returned home with stories of the narrow, tree-lined highway that cuts across the state of New Hampshire. I was quickly informed by family members who were in the know.
Kancamagus Highway is a 34.5-mile stretch that runs between Lincoln and Conway. It has been designated a National Scenic Byway because of its breathtaking views. The route, which runs from west to east across the state passes through the heartland of the scenic White Mountain National Forest. The highway pull-offs offer views of the White Mountains, and provide access to places like Sabbaday Falls or Rocky Gorge. On the west end (the Lincoln side), you can see sights such as Loon Mountain, Hobo Railroad and Granite State Scenic Railway, while on the east, there are Cranmore Mountain Resort and the Conway Scenic Railroad.
It is worth driving the scenic byway at any time of year. However, the Kanc is most beautiful in the fall, when trees along the roadway take on vibrant hues of orange, yellow and red. New Hampshire attracts millions of tourists in a short period of time each fall because of this highway. You have to see the vibrant colors to believe them.
If seeing the spectacular fall display You can also stop off at the numerous hiking trails located just off of the highway. Popular routes include the Sabbaday Brook Trail, which leads to the waterfalls mentioned above, Lincoln Woods Trailhead and the Boulder Loop Trail. There are many more trails to choose from if none of these appeals to you.
