California has many perks. California’s weather is nearly always perfect. The mountains are inviting and the state’s inland jewels, such as the ever-popular Disneyland, are also a great attraction. Palm SpringsWeekend travelers will be enchanted by the. But for Californians who love to travel (my former self included) there’s one common gripe: getting to the gorgeous Caribbean islands takes the better part of a day—10 hours at best. You can still get a tropical experience without ever getting on a flight. Simply head to Catalina Island instead.

Catalina, located just one hour by ferry off the coast of Southern California, has gained a reputation for being the “Caribbean of California”. This is thanks to the island’s bluer-thanblue waters, charming beachside hotels, relaxed coastal vibe and great dining. Avalon Bay is the main harbor of the island, which has a crescent-shaped shape. The island covers 76 square kilometers.

On calm days you can look straight down from the pier to the kelp bed below where vibrant fish are woven between strands and seaweed. Of course, you’re welcome to jump in too—especially at Avalon’s public beaches: South Beach, Middle Beach, and Step Beach, all perfect for a refreshing dip.

Booking a kayaking adventure with Descanso Beach Ocean Sports Paddle along the coast to see more marine life. The bright orange Garibaldi is Catalina’s trademark fish. Sea lions may also appear to greet you.

Catalina’s famous glass-bottom boat tours Any visitor will find that they are an essential part of their trip. These boats are a great way to see some of the most interesting marine life, such as bat rays or even sharks. The boats depart directly from Avalon’s dock, with local guides on hand who will explain what you are seeing.

As the sun starts to set, it’s time to head to the beach. Catalina Casino. Despite the name, there’s no gambling here—but you can take a tour of its stunning Art Deco interiors and learn about its glamorous Hollywood history. Explore Avalon’s charming, pedestrian-friendly streets filled with shops, souvenirs and cozy restaurants. You don’t like to walk? Hop in the car golf cart tour Avalon has been explored to the fullest extent.

Catalina can be a wonderful day trip. But staying overnight is even more enjoyable. Book a room in Hotel Atwater The cliffside Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel A truly memorable getaway.

So grab your umbrellas and fruity drinks, pack some sunscreen and throw a floppy sun hat in your weekend bag. Catalina is your easy, breezy, California-style Caribbean getaway—no passport required.
