The resort is nestled in the lush, tropical landscapes of Bali. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan Even 27 years after opening, the hotel continues to seduce guests. Its striking entrance—a footbridge suspended above the Ayung River Valley that ends with a rice bowl-shaped rooftop looking out to tiered rice paddies and gardens—is an architectural masterpiece.
The resort recently underwent some updates. It was renovated by a trio international firms, including Australia, Japan and Indonesia. They transformed the spa into a 53.496-square foot wellness sanctuary. The new treatment villas have hand-chiseled bathtubs and massage bed, while the spa’s menu emphasizes water-focused Balinese therapies.
There was a welcome ceremony when I arrived at the resort. It consisted of a brief introduction, a choice of a sash color and a setting an intention for my visit. (I picked blue because, according to the staff, it signifies confidence.) As I entered the entrance, I heard the Ayung River in background while the treetops moved in the wind. In no time, I was holding a welcome beverage and on my way to the villa.
It may only be 15 minutes to Ubud’s busy downtown, but the resort’s private one-bedroom bungalows scattered around the property are peaceful oases tucked away in the jungle. Local art, private plunge pools, oversized windows, and French doors invite nature inside, and create the ultimate visual—and auditory—setting for a complete physical and mental reset.

Activities and Experiences

A popular choice for off-site activities is the Can You Keep a Secret? A tour that highlights local, off-the-radar attractions like a nearby farming village. I first visited a Banyan Tree and a beautiful Temple, then went to an historic house where I joined a Balinese family to make Canang Sari – a daily Balinese gift of flowers, leaves, and incense in a palm leave. My offering was taken to my next destination: a temple of water where I participated in a Melukat water ceremony, which purifies and cleanses the mind, body and soul.
The resort offers cooking classes, in which guests are taken to a local market and then taught how to prepare an Indonesian dish. You can also choose to visit the Bali Treetop Adventure Park or go rafting.
The resort also has a riverside swimming pool, a fitness and spa center, a beauty salon, and wellness classes for free, such as yoga.
The Spa
The Sacred River Spa, which was rebuilt and redesigned in October 2024, is the jewel of the resort. This spa is a 53,496-square-foot complex of villas that are tucked into a lily garden. It takes its inspiration from Niskala philosophy, or the “unseen power” of Bali.
The treatment starts and ends with a soundbath using quartz crystal singing cups. Massages, facials and six healing rituals are available on the spa menu, including Restu Bumi – a spiritual cleansing treatment using local tools, herbs and warm gemstones.
The riverside also has a new Yoga Pavilion, and another platform is available for wellness talks. One such experience includes the Sacred Nap Ritual where a wellness guide guides participants in a story, while they are cradled blissfully in silk hammocks.
