The short-term rental sector in Spain is bracing itself for a major disruption, as the housing ministry prepares to remove thousands of unregistered holiday apartments during peak summer.
Beginning in mid-August the Spanish housing ministry will enforce a law 2024 that requires short-term rentals in Spain to display a unique registration number. Listings which do not comply with the law will be removed by major platforms such as Airbnb.
“We continue to put a stop to illegal tourist apartments to guarantee the right to decent housing,” Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez said in mid-July when the government and Airbnb announced an agreement to enforce the new law.
The first apartments on platforms will be removed in mid-August, after a 10-day appeal period.
Airbnb, according to a spokesperson who spoke with Skift Tuesday, has been leading discussions in the European continent.
