    Brazil is a wonderful destination for those who love wildlife. It has some of Earth’s most diverse eco-systems. Brazil’s spectacular nature, from the Amazon rain forest to the idyllic Fernando de Noronha Islands, is unlike any other. Here’s where to go and where to stay at each destination, as well as the best time of year to visit.

    The Amazon is home to over three million species of wildlife, including the famous pink river dolphin, tree frogs, spider monkeys, macaws, and anacondas—alongside diverse fish species and reptiles, like piranhas and caimans.

    Then, you can get started. igapós, Canoeing through small waterways in black-water-flooded forests is a great way to see dolphins, vibrant birds and howler monkeys. You can also trek along ancient paths for a chance to hear the howler monkeys. Take a tour at night to spot caimans or cross canopy platforms to enjoy it all. The pink dolphin sanctuary is a great place to learn about local conservation efforts.

    The best time to visit

    Although you can visit the Amazon all year round, it is best to travel during the dry season between June and November, when the water level is lower. This makes it easier for wildlife to be spotted.

    The Pantanal

    The Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland, is home to 656 species of birds, 159 species of mammals, as well as countless species fish and butterflies. The largest tropical wetland in the world, the waterways of the Pantanal are the perfect habitat for caimans, jaguars and capybaras. 

    Explore the vast wetlands on horseback, with a canoe, during nature walks or by open 4×4. Expert biologists, vets and other experts will help you track down the jaguars or monitor the macaws’ nesting areas to support conservation efforts.

    The best time to visit

    The best time to go is from May to October, as the animals are drawn to the shrinking water resources during the dry season. You can get up close to the animals during this period.

    Fernando de Noronha

    The Fernando de Noronha island archipelago has been hailed as one of Brazil’s most valuable natural preserves. 70% of the island and its surrounding waters is protected as a National Marine Park. The rich biodiversity of the area has been preserved by conservation efforts, making it an oasis for marine and land species. You’ll see spinner dolphins and green sea turtles below the waves. Also, you can find spotted rays and reef sharks in Praia de Sueste. The cliffs, rocky outcrops, and seabirds that live above the water line are protected by the masked, red-footed, and majestic frigatebirds.

    When is the best time to visit?

    The marine life on this island is active all year, but from August to the end of January you can enjoy diving and snorkeling with clarity up to 30 metres and low waves. Visitors limits and eco-friendly infrastructure are part of the commitment to sustainability. This ensures that future generations will continue to be able experience this amazing wildlife.

    Bahia

    Bahia is located in the northeastern part of Brazil. With a terrain that ranges from tropical on the coast, to semi-arid in the middle, it’s a wildlife paradise. You can see the Golden Lion Tamar, the Maned Wolf or humpback whales. Other wildlife you can see include sloths, marine turtles, tropical birds and more.

    Dive into Praia dos Coqueiros, a beach in the state of Piauí, for views of the coral reefs that attract tropical fish, manta rays, and reef sharks; cruise to Itaquena Cove for snorkeling amongst the corals; or swim in the refreshing waters of the Corumbau River and admire birds along the banks.

    The best time to visit

    Bahia is open all year round, but for the best whale-watching, you should visit during the migration season from June to November. This is when mothers and calves are seen breaching near the coast.
