I’ve been planning trips to Italy for decades, and this is the perfect itinerary for busy travelers, plus some extra tips to make your trip as smooth—and speedy—as possible.
Days 1 & 2: Rome

Begin your journey by Rome. You can explore the city, taking in its ancient ruins and historic architecture. Rome is known for being an open-air art museum. From Piazza Navona, you can walk to the Pantheon, then to the Trevi Fountain and to the Spanish Steps. You may need to reserve tickets in advance.
Via dei condotti is a high-end shopping district in the Spanish Steps area, with brands such as Prada and Missoni. The Colosseum and Forum can be toured with a private tour guide later that day. Rent bicycles and ride along the Appian way, an ancient empire route that has been turned into a tourist attraction. Day 3: Florence

Firenze is only a train ride away from Rome Termini. You can tour the city in as little as 3 hours. The original statue of David is a sight that never gets old. Be sure to purchase advance tickets for the Accademia gallery. After that, you can window shop in the high-end stores along Via de’ Tornabuoni. Procacci Bar 1885 is a renowned bar. aperitivo hour, and you can end your day with a Tuscan dinner at Ristorante Frescobaldi Firenze.

Days 4 & 5: The Amalfi Coast

Train to Napoli Centrale Station in the morning, then taxi or private car ride to the Amalfi Coast. Take a trip to Pompeii or spend an afternoon at a beachclub and soak up the sun. Positano, Capri and other party towns are popular with those who like to party. Ravello offers tranquility as well as stunning views. When staying in Ravello head to Scala and dine at Trattoria di Lorenzo on the terrace. The restaurant offers fresh seafood with thoughtful wine pairings.
Your final day before flying out of Naples is up to you. You can spend it however you like: on a private yacht along the coast, hiking the Sentiero degli Dei or “Path of the Gods,” or taking a ferry to Capri For its world-renowned shopping scene. There are no bad choices in Italy.

- Pack light. Carry-on luggage will allow you to move quickly between trains and hotel rooms.
- Fly regional airports and save time. The airports tend to be smaller, and the immigration lines are shorter. New nonstop flights are available from the U.S., including to cities such as Naples and Catania.
- Plan your trip in advance. Make reservations and schedule tours before you leave to ensure a smooth trip.
- Avoid the peak seasons by traveling in shoulder or off-seasons. Avoid crowds by traveling between November to March.
- High-speed trains are a great way to travel. Trenitalia Eurostar & Italo allow you to hop between cities in 179 kilometers an hour. Purchase your tickets in advance to save time.
