I started solo traveling Just after college I drove over 10,000 miles in a car rental around South Africa, Botswana and Namibia to keep up with the latest news. Lonely Planet guidebook. It was intimidating to start my first trip. I was worried that I would get bored of myself talking to me and feel awkward eating alone. After a few days on the road, it became apparent how much I enjoy traveling solo. It gives me the freedom to listen to the same music on repeat, read a book while eating, and skip the must-see attractions that I do not care for. It’s a very empowering experience.

Being a solo traveler is not without its risks. This is why I always pack some essential safety items before I hit the road–and right now, many of my favorites are discounted.

    Apple AirTag 4-pack

    Amazon

What I bring depends on my destination and the mode of transport. I love digital trackers like Apple AirTags They are great for keeping track of everything while on the road. I put one in my checked baggage to help me find it if lost. To be on the safe side, I also put one on Poppy’s neck. I will even put one in my car when I park it at the airport to know exactly where it is if it’s stolen. If you have an iPhone, AirTags are the way to go–and a four-pack is currently $80 at Amazon. The location of each tagged device will be displayed in the Find My app.

    Aikelida RFID-blocking Travel Money Belt

    Amazon

While I have worn money belts in the past as a form of theft protection, I use mine more as a way to keep my phone, credit cards, and ID close by when I am on a hike, or going to a resort pool. I like Aikelida’s travel wallet This is the purpose. It has RFID blocking capabilities.

There are two large zipper pockets, and two smaller stash pockets within the main pockets. It has a hidden stretchy mesh back pocket that makes it easy to find and separate items. Amazon customers who purchased this money belt for wearing under clothing also praised the product. one reviewer sayingThis was so light and comfortable that I forgot to wear it.

    Huynl Hidden Camera Detector

    Amazon

You’ve probably heard horror stories of Airbnb hosts who are shady. installing hidden cameras Traveling with a hidden-camera detector can help you feel more secure. This anti-spy camera detector by Huynl It is portable and lightweight. It can detect RF frequencies between 100MHz and 8GHz. The battery can run continuously for up to 25 hours. It only takes 2 hours to fully charge. This amazing deal allows you to get it for just $47.

Travelon Small Anti Theft Crossbody Bag

    Amazon

Another must-pack is a crossbody bag that’s anti-theft. this one by Travelon This bag is available in four colors. This small messenger bag is lightweight but durable and has RFID blocking technology that prevents thieves from stealing your personal information or credit card number by scanning your bag in a crowded street or on a bus. This bag is also cut-proof and slashproof, which will help you stay safe from pickpockets. Even the locking hardware allows you to strap it on something in a bar or restaurant.

    She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm

    Amazon

The TSA does not have a problem with personal safety alarms. This is comforting to me as a female solo traveler. The She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm I always have it in my suitcase. The ease of use is great. You can use the alarm to alert others if you think you’re in a potentially dangerous situation. Just pull the pin and the siren will sound. To turn off the alarm, simply slide the pin into the alarm body.

I have never pulled the alarm. I clip it to my purse or pocket, depending on where I am walking. Amazon customers have given it over 12,000 5-star ratings, proving that it is effective. “I feel safer in crowds; I just have to pull this alarm which starts screaming,” one reviewer wrote. “I keep it pinched to the strap in my purse for quick access.”

    LifeStraw personal water filter

    Amazon

It is important to stay healthy while traveling alone. I always pack a water purifier when going on a trip. When I travel to places like Thailand where the tap water is not safe to drink, I carry a water filter. I like LifeStraw Filter Straw It is portable, easy to use and filters out 99.99 percent waterborne bacteria, parasites and E. coli, as well as Giardia and E. coli.

Remove the caps on both ends and submerge them in the container you will be drinking from. Sip normally. It’s hard to believe that something so simple could be such a lifesaver. But it is. Amazon has given The LifeStraw over 10,000 five-star reviews.

Anker Magnetic Portable Charger Anker 622

    Amazon

It’s scary to think about my phone dying while I am traveling. So I always carry a portable charger. this one from Anker I keep it in my purse. I feel more secure knowing that it’s there. The charger is small and portable, yet still powerful.

It charges my Google Pixel Pro 8, and I can charge two devices simultaneously with USB C and USB A ports. It charges quickly and takes about two hours for my phone to be fully charged. A coupon is available on the product page.

Search Alert TSA-approved travel combination luggage cable lock

    Amazon

Throwing a a luggage cable lock like this one Search Alert into your packing list. This lock is TSA approved, so you can use to secure your luggage during your flight to protect it from theft. This lock is great because I have had friends lose items from their checked baggage before. The lock can also be used if you use public transport, or are staying in a hostel. You can keep your luggage locked while you’re not around.

Everlit Survival Car Emergency Roadside Safety Tools Kit

    Amazon

I always take a road safety kit with me when I go on a roadtrip. this one from Everlit Includes everything you need in the event of an emergency. This includes a small air compressor which can quickly inflate a tire if you are experiencing a slow leak. The 12-foot jumper cables are longer than the standard ones and make it easier to start your car, no matter where you park it. It also comes with a 108-piece kit of first aid, so it is a good idea to get it whether or not it is on sale.

Sabre Frontiersman Maximum Strength Bear Spray

    Amazon

I carry bear spray On road trips, I always carry a gun even if there is no expectation of running into a mountain or a bear. You can use it to defend yourself against other humans, particularly when you are traveling alone. If you plan to carry bear repellent to protect yourself in the event of an attack by a black bear, it is important to learn how to use this product before you leave.

You should diffuse the situation before spraying the bear. To do this, turn your face away, remain silent, or speak in soothing tones and slowly back out of the area. If that doesn’t work, and the bear charges at you, then spray it when the bear is less than 15 feet away. Bear spray is not recommended for flights. TSA confiscates any carry-on or checked luggage that contains bear spray.

Casetify Rope Cell Phone Strap with Card

    Amazon

Phone straps I believe are a great idea for many reasons. Safety-wise, they keep your phone on you, and not in your pocket where pickpockets could steal it. These are great for outdoor adventures when I want to snap pictures, but I don’t want my phone to fall while scrambling up rocks or to see a beautiful waterfall. The Casetify Rope Phone Strap It is compatible with many phone cases, and it has a two layer adjustable rope strap that makes carrying it around a breeze.

Portapow 3rd Generation USB Data Blocker Set

    Amazon

It may seem innocent to charge your phone in a public USB outlet. What many people do not know is that USB cables are capable of transmitting data. This makes it possible for someone to hack your phone, stealing stored information like passwords and credit card numbers. This is called “juice-jacking.” There is an easy and cheap fix using a data-blocking tool like this one from PortaPow. Plug your USB cord in the device, and then plug it into an outlet at the next airport or train station you visit to charge.

Yoyi Yoyi Undercover RFID Bra Wallet

    Amazon

I’m not a big fan of wearing money belts, but I’m all about the bra wallet when I need to stash cash or credit cards in areas where pickpockets operate–it also works great if I don’t feel like carrying a purse to a concert and am not wearing clothes with pockets. This comfy, discreet undercover wallet Comes in two sizes for multiple bra sizes. You can use it by snapping the elastic straps on your bra strap. Then, tucking the pouch in. It can hold multiple cards, IDs or even a car keys. It blocks RFID as well, and the interior pocket lining is water-resistant.
