Key Takeaways
Airline and route can determine whether passengers receive alcoholic beverages, amenity kits, or Wi-Fi in economy. After the main service is over, flight attendants will grant more requests, especially if passengers are polite.
Even if you are flying economy, you can still enjoy some special benefits. If you ask, these extras can be had even if they aren’t advertised. Dollar Flight Club CEO and founder Jesse Neugarten Many travelers are unaware that a simple request in an economy class can result in a few extras.
However, Quinn EnglishFounder of FreeQuinnt FlyerHe explains that economy freebies are not available on all routes. He says that, for instance, longer flights will often offer more benefits. Neugarten says that international routes are almost always better than domestic flights.
English also notes that “full service airlines like Delta United and American” will offer the best freebies for economy. Both he and Neugarten say Travel + Leisure Budget carriers are more restricted in their offerings, which is understandable, as they strive to keep costs (and ticket price) low.
Remember that kindness and patience will go a long ways when asking for freebies. English writes, “The main thing to remember is the fact that most airlines do not overstaff flight attendants, so their workload can be heavy, especially when boarding and getting ready for takeoff or landing.” In light of this, these are probably not the best times to ask for help. Instead, wait until after the main service has finished and the cabin has settled down—that’s when flight attendants are most likely to have the time (and bandwidth) to help.

Food and Snacks

Sure, peanuts and crackers can hit the spot—but sometimes, you’re craving something a bit more satisfying at 35,000 feet. Neugarten says that several international airlines offer multi-course meals for free in economy. Emirates, for example, serves full trays that include a main entrée, fresh salad or fruit, crackers and cheese, and dessert.
Japan Airlines offers its passengers a unique twist on inflight dining. They serve Udon de Sky, their specially-branded instant noodles. It’s a comforting, warm treat that is both playful and Japanese. Air France serves a French inspired meal to economy passengers. It includes a starter dish, main dish with cheese and dessert. Lufthansa serves a generous 3-course meal to its economy passengers.
Neugarten points out that JetBlue and Delta offer a wide variety of snacks, even though they don’t serve full meals. Both airlines offer a variety of name-brand snacks, including Goldfish, Gold Chips, Cheez-Its and Quaker Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars. And, of course, the fan-favorite Biscoff cookie is available on both—a sweet little perk that many travelers look forward to mid-flight.
Amenity Kits
Even though we don’t object to free food, an amenity kit is something that can make a trip feel special. Neugarten says some airlines give out amenity kits on long-haul flight that include toothbrushes as well as eye masks, socks and other items. You might also get lip balm, a small bottle of facial mist, or moisturizer. He says that Turkish Airlines and Emirates are the two airlines that offer this generous perk. However, our research revealed that other airlines such as Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways also provide this thoughtful extra.

Free Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly commonYou’ll also find it on JetBlue, Delta and, beginning in January 2026 American Airlines. Select international airlines, including Emirates, Air France and Qatar Airways offer connectivity in all cabin classes. It’s now easier than ever to keep connected while flying at 35,000 ft. These offers may require you to register for a free frequent flyer account.
Cozy Extras
Extras such as pillows and blankets make a huge difference in terms of comfort (and how long you stay!). Comfortable extras like pillows and blankets can make a big difference, especially for long-haul flights that last overnight. Although these items aren’t guaranteed by every airline, longer routes often have them.
Air Canada for example offers complimentary pillows and blankets Many of its international flights offer free blankets and pillows, although other airlines might only provide them on request or in limited quantities. Neugarten advises to wait until the service is over and then politely ask for a blanket or pillow. Neugarten says that a simple phrase like “If you have extra pillows later, I would really appreciate it” can go a long way. “Flight attendants will be more willing to assist you if they see that you are kind, respectful, and not entitled or pushy.”

Air France follows a similar strategy, providing complimentary wine and champagne (selected exclusively by Xavier Thuizat the head sommelier of the airline).
Activity Packs for Children
Even the youngest economy passengers are eligible for freebies. Neugarten says that airlines like Air Canada provide activity kits with coloring books and crayons to keep kids entertained on flights. Asking nicely is key, as is asking when there isn’t a service rush. Air France, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines offer activity packs in all cabin classes.
English writes that “many airline will give children things like pilot wings or activity books if they ask them.” “My 2-year-old has a lovie doll and a miniature stuffed plane she got on Lufthansa last year, and she can’t sleep without them!” he said. Cathay Pacific, on the other hand, offers children between three and six years old special toys to play with. They can also take them home as a memento of their experience.

Delta offers a number of unique and exclusive freebies. trading cards These are often matched to the type of aircraft you are flying on. The airline has been giving out these cards for more than two decades but they gained wide recognition only after going viral on the internet a few years ago.
Here’s everything you need to do to get one of these cards. As English explains, “Some—but not all—Delta pilots have these, so when they aren’t busy, feel free to ask.” English suggests that you check with a flight attendant before going to the cockpit. This is the most safe and respectful way to ask.
United and Frontier Airlines also offer this collectible.
