Hilton is unfazed despite recent cuts in U.S. tax breaks for clean energy, and despite government programs intended to make renewables more affordable and accessible to businesses.
Hotels are looking to reduce their fossil fuel consumption by using renewable energy. Hilton says that by relying on private utility partnerships, it has been able to mitigate some of the risks.
Utilities in the U.S. are mostly independent. Jean Garris Hand told Skift that they are private companies. “Most renewable power we buy is through utilities. Even if the programs are cut back in certain areas, our purchasing still happens.”
The company’s demand signals are said to help shape the markets. Garris Hand stated that the financial transactions happen where the rubber hits the road. By requesting renewable energy in markets, utilities will know that we are interested.
Hilton’s Renewable Power Purchase Program, launched in 2020, was adopted by 100% of Hilton-owned hotels and properties.
