I have been a travel and tourism writer for many years. professional packerI’m acutely aware that bulky or heavy items, as well as those that are just unneeded, take up a lot of space in a bag, duffel, backpack, etc. I avoid excess layers, full-size toiletries, and, my ultimate packing nemesis, the classic travel pillow at all costs—especially if I’m traveling carry-on-only.

I am not a minimalist, but I do believe in packing smartly and efficiently. I want to travel comfortably, with everything I need. Instead of multiple jackets, I only pack one piece of outerwear that is versatile. Instead of multiple coats, I pack one versatile outerwear piece. travel-friendly beauty products This is a great alternative to full-sized bottles. If I am taking a flight at night, I will use it instead. nifty head strap Instead of a large pillow, use a smaller one. The extra space will allow me to pack a few more clothes.

Below I share 10 products that take up space and make it difficult to pack light. Also, what you should instead be packing.

    Don’t pack: Full-size toiletries

    Instead, pack TSA-approved travel capsules

    Amazon

I used to find packing toiletries the most stressful. As I wear contacts, I keep solution with me at all times. I also have a hair and skincare regimen that I like to stick to when I travel. The idea of reducing everything was so overwhelming that I would occasionally check a suitcase just to bring face wash and conditioner in full size.

Since then, I’ve created an arsenal of TSA sized products to replace this bad habit. face wash, contact solution. toothpaste I have a toiletry bag that is always full of products. Investing in a few extras will make it easier to carry around. Cadence CapsulesThey are also great for body lotions or shampoos. My toiletries are all in one small Dopp Kit that I carry in my bag of personal items or carry-on luggage.

    Packing too many tech accessories

Pack a universal charger & adapter instead

    Amazon

Before every trip, a day or two in advance, I will do a quick audit of my luggage. tech products I’m packing. I will charge my headphones, and gather the cords and adapters I need depending on where I am going. Multi-functional products like the a are a great way to save space, and reduce the amount of technology I have to bring. universal adaptor and charger You can also find out more about the following: multi-charging cablesBoth methods help me to keep my tech gear as minimal as possible when I travel.

    Don’t pack: Jeans

Lightweight trousers are the best option to bring instead

    Everlane

I love jeans as much as the next person—as evidenced by the number of pairs in my closet—but they’re not exactly travel-friendly. The weight of denim in a bag is considerable. Wearing my favourite pair of jeans to travel in will save me space. pants made of a lighter fabricLike these Everlane linen trousers. They’ll keep you cool during hot summer days.

Hardshell sunglasses case: Don’t forget to pack!

    Instead, pack a sunglasses pouch

    Amazon

It might not seem important, but if you want to pack smartly, every inch counts. Instead of using the bulky case that you have been carrying for years opt for a sunglasses pouch. The lens protector is lighter, easier to store in small places in your bag and still offers plenty of protection.

Avoid packing bulky outerwear layers and clothing.

    Pack a versatile jacket instead

    Quince

My closet at home is filled with down coats, wool coats, leather jackets, capes, faux fur, windbreakers…you name it, it’s in my collection. I only pack one outerwear item when I travel. By packing an extra jacket in my suitcase I can save half the space of my luggage.

I bring a few items of clothing that I can use in transit. leather bomber jacket. The jacket is casual, but it feels like it would be appropriate in dressier settings. It also adapts well to changing temperatures. This jacket is also a bonus because you can wear it in the air without feeling overheated.

Shoes are too many to pack

Pack a pair of shoes that you can wear anywhere instead

    Allbirds

Because shoes can quickly fill up your luggage, I use the rule of thumb that you should only have two to three pairs. When I travel in winter, I stick to two styles that are versatile: a boot I can wear anywhere and a shoe I can wear with anything. Summer is when I wear sneakers. Allbirds Tree Dasher 2s Packing a wedge sandal and a similar light sandal for the plane is a good idea. Cole Haan’s Flynn Flats In my bag. And of course, every pair I pack is comfortable—you won’t catch me wasting space on a shoe that pinches or gives me blisters.

    Don’t pack: A neck pillow

What to pack instead? A head strap

    Amazon

It’s been at least a solid decade since I’ve used a typical neck pillow—you know the thick, super cushiony ones that you only use for a couple of hours on the plane. Over the years I have tried a number of alternatives, but recently I found that A head strap is the best solution for overnight flights—and it takes up almost zero space in my bag when not in use. It is designed to fit around the winged support of an airplane seat. You are able to adjust it according to your needs in order for your head and neck not be strained by your head swaying around.

    Avoid a bulky toiletry bag

What to pack instead? A more compact option

    Amazon

Toiletry bags I am also well versed in travel bags. I’ve tried dozens of different styles from top brands. Although I have a few bags that I rotate between, a flat rectangular bag generally fits better in my suitcase and takes up less space. I can put things on top and around it and never worry about it getting squashed when I zip my suitcase.

This stylish option Amazon’s rectangular-shaped bag is made of durable PVC that is waterproof. It’s easy to see what you need with the clear design, rather than digging around in your bag for your toothbrush or medication.

Do not pack multiple hairstyling instruments

Instead, pack a do-it-all styling tool

    Amazon

You don’t need to carry a hair dryer, curling iron and straightener with you when there are so many multi-purpose tools available. I swear by Dyson Airwrap When I travel. I got my first Dyson Airwrap—I now own two, one for the U.S. and one for frequent travels to the U.K.—in 2020, and I’ve never looked back. I take it on every single trip because it functions as a hairdryer, smoother/straightener, voluminizer, and curling iron. The main device is small and fits in a cube.

What if you have a limited budget? Amazon customers swear by this lower-priced five-in-one hair styling toolOn sale for $117. This product can straighten, curl, volumize and more. It comes with a handy carrying case which holds the wand as well as attachments.

    Hardcover Books: Don’t Pack Them

    Instead, pack an e-reader

    Amazon

It pains me to admit that hardback books are not the best companion for travelers. It’s not uncommon for me to have one or two hardbacks in my bag while traveling. This year, however, I am going to heed the advice of my friends and invest in a e-reader. Amazon Kindle. It’s lighter than a book or Bookstores), and I’ll no longer have to worry about finishing a good read while in transit (which occasionally results in picking up a new title at the airport and adding even more bulk to my luggage).
