    You know that if you’re a Type-A travel planner there is much more to it than just checking off your list of places to visit and restaurants to try. One of the most crucial things to consider is where to go to the bathroom while on the road. The answer is not always easy if you travel in the United States.

    The U.S. has a severe shortage of public bathrooms, according to a new study from TenaBrands for adult incontinence. For every 100,000 residents, there are only 8 public bathrooms. You can imagine how sad this statistic is if you ever had to stand in line for the restroom.

    Tena has ranked the top cities and states in the U.S. for public restroom accessibility. They took into account factors like cleanliness, accessibility to wheelchairs, density of restrooms and discoverability. Wyoming, Montana, Hawaii and other states have the best access to public restrooms in the U.S.

    Wyoming has one of the most extensive collections of public restrooms. On average, 118 bathrooms are listed on a state-level search. Most of these are easy to locate, well spaced, and have been reviewed. Plus, the state is ranked No. 1 for having the most wheelchair-accessible bathrooms in the country.

    Montana scored highly, in part due to Visit Montana’s a list of public restrooms Located throughout the state, they are easy to find for both visitors and residents.

    Hawaii is awash with public restrooms. Oahu, alone, boasts over 215 bathrooms that are maintained by the government. Google Maps shows only 120 public restrooms across the entire state. Finding the bathrooms may require some local knowledge.

    North Dakota’s public bathrooms ranked first in terms of cleanliness. In total, 94 per cent of bathrooms in North Dakota were rated four stars or better. Alaska, Indiana, New Mexico, and other states also did well with an average of 88 per cent of reviews rating bathrooms at four stars.

    New Hampshire and Kentucky were the least impressive states in this study, with each having a small number of public toilets (No. New Hampshire and Kentucky were the least impressive states in this study, with a low number of public restrooms (No. 20, respectively).
