Cookeville is a hidden gem between Nashville and Knoxville. The town has all of the things I enjoy about Gatlinburg, without the traffic and the long waits at the restaurants.
Cookeville, instead, welcomes you to its cascading falls, cozy accommodations and parks that are dog and toddler friendly. It also offers some of the most warm hospitality I have experienced in the South. (This is saying a lot, because I am from this region). Whether you visit for the waterfalls, or just to enjoy the peace and quiet of this small town, it is full of charm and beauty.

How to Get There

Cookeville is situated just off I-40 about halfway between Nashville Knoxville. Nashville International Airport (BNA), located about an hour west, is the nearest major hub. It’s a scenic and easy drive east, through rolling farmland. Cookeville can only be explored by car, particularly if you want to visit state parks, the river or chase waterfalls.

Cummins Falls is one of my top recommendations for visitors. It was by far my favorite place in the region. It is highly recommended that you get a permit in order to enter the gorge. This is especially important if swimming at the bottom of the falls is something you would like to do. If you’re travelling with children, this section of the trail might not be the best for them. Instead, opt for the Overlook Trail which offers a great view of the falls.
Cookeville and Nashville are only about 1.5 hours apart. Spend three to four nights here before you head into Nashville if you want the best of both. Enjoy a mixture of local, relaxed atmosphere. Tennessee charm Nashville’s fast-paced, vibrant energy. It was a perfect way to spend the week in Tennessee.

Cookeville is at its best in the summer. Dogwood Park has a splash pad, and the Cumberland River temperature is perfect for paddling. May through September are ideal months for outdoor activities.
Davis also agrees that summer is the time when Cookeville really comes alive. Summer is my favorite time to explore Cookeville,” she said. “There’s so much to enjoy outdoors—whether it’s hiking, chasing waterfalls, kayaking, or camping under the stars. I love to stroll through the WestSide, with a cup of coffee in my hand, or eat on the patios at our local restaurants.

Cummins Falls, my personal favourite waterfall is featured in this campaign. Cummins Falls is not only beautiful and impressive, but also easily accessible from downtown.
Davis said that Cummins Falls and Burgess Falls are both favorites of hers. Both are conveniently located near downtown, have accessible trails and are a great family outing.
Relax at Dogwood Park
Dogwood Park, located in the heart of downtown Cookeville is a popular spot for both visitors and locals. The park is especially great for families who have small children, with its green areas, splash pad and large playground.
Paddle the Cumberland River
A scenic getaway for kayaking or canoeing is just a short drive away from downtown. Rentals are available from local outfitters, and the calm waters make it a great place for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Take a look at the Cookeville Depot Museum It is important to understand the history of the city. The museum is housed in an old train depot that has been beautifully restored. It contains artifacts, model trains and other items that help bring the rail history of the area to life. It’s small enough to visit in less than an hour but is packed with charm. This is especially true if you are traveling with children or love old-timey nostalgia.
WestSide District: Stroll through the WestSide District.
You’ll love the WestSide District if you like to find local treasures. This walkable, artsy stretch of downtown has a variety of boutiques and antique shops as well as art galleries.

Granville is located just outside Cookeville. Wildwood Resort & Marina On the Cumberland River, you can enjoy a tranquil and nature-oriented escape. The drive to town and the restaurants is a little long, and there is no cell service. However, the views of river, fresh air and peace more than compensate for that. There are many places to stay, including Airstreams, cabins, hotel rooms and others. The waterfront is peaceful and relaxing, but it’s also a short distance from Cookeville.

This restaurant offers Louisiana-inspired Cajun food. I was recently in New Orleans, and was amazed at how authentic it is. Crawdaddy’s Feel and taste the food. The shrimp po’boy is huge and the jambalaya has soul.
Ralph’s Donut Shop
A trip to Cookeville would not be complete without a visit to Ralph’s Donut Shop. These donuts make a great breakfast treat; my favorite flavor was blueberry.
