Everyone wants to find a little peace and calm, especially in today’s chaotic world. For those serious about finding zen, it may be necessary to move to Colorado, the state with the most peaceful living environment in the U.S.
Insider Monkey released its list of peaceful places to live in 2023. It compiled the list by searching for destinations that offer the highest quality of life, using the Niche Screener.
A peaceful environment is one that offers calmness and serenity to its residents. According to the website, “Our hypothesis is that a peaceful environment is free of disturbing sounds such as traffic and other noises.” “We chose mean noise level to be our primary metric”, a metric derived from the ArcGIS Lights and Noise Map Viewer.
Then, the focus was on what it meant to be a destination that is “serene”. Based on the Trust for Public Land’s database, it used the proximity of a park to measure the destination. The website stated that “all locations where more than half the population can walk to an outdoor park within 10 minutes are considered peaceful places for residents.” The website then ranked the U.S.’s most peaceful locations based on noise levels and outdoor space.

The findings showed that Fort Collins was a peaceful place to live in the United States. It also noted that the average sound level is 38.03dBA, which they deemed to be “reasonable.” In reality, the Hearing Health Foundation According to the report, this noise is equivalent to the sound of rustling leafs or an average room. Also, the team found that 73 per cent of Fort Collins’s population lives within 10 minutes walking distance of a nearby park. The team noted that “both the Horsesetooth Reservoir, and Lory State Park is a popular outdoor area near the city.”
There’s more to this city than these two parks. As Visit Fort Collins explains, the town is also home to “world-class whitewater rafting on the nationally-designated ‘Wild and Scenic’ Cache La Poudre River,” and is home to 20 local breweries that will happily pour you a local pint. If the downtown area looks familiar, it’s because that is what inspired Disneyland’s Main Street USA. Authenticity is the only way to describe all of these adorable little shops and old-school structures.
Fort Collins isn’t America’s only tranquil spot. Boulder, Colorado also made it to the top 10. Ann Arbor, Michigan, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Green Bay Wisconsin round out the top 5.
