    Virginia Beach Is the Birthplace of East Coast Surfing—It’s Getting the First ‘Wavegarden’ in the U.S.

    Surf culture runs deep in Virginia BeachLong considered the birthplace for East Coast surfing. It’s now leveling up. Atlantic Park SurfThe first wave-generation surf lagoon powered by Wavegarden technology in the United States.

    Set to open by July, this high-tech lagoon will pump out consistent, rideable waves year-round—just two blocks from the ocean.

    This surf park anchors Atlantic Park, a 10,35-acre entertainment area developed in collaboration by hometown hero Pharrell. The project sits on hallowed ground—the former site of the original Dome, a legendary music venue that once hosted Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles before its demolition in 1994. The development, which will be opened in phases, will include restaurants, shops, residences and an outdoor concert venue. The surf lagoon is the one that’s getting the most attention. 

    Amanda Jarratt told reporters that Virginia Beach has a longstanding surf culture. But this new attraction adds an extra dimension to the city’s tourism. Travel + Leisure. It’s something new and unique, which allows surfers the opportunity to excel in their sport. 

    Lagoons are designed to suit all levels of skill. Beginners can enjoy gentle rollers, while advanced surfers will find fast barreling waves. The sessions are 55 minutes long, cost $100 and have seven different wave settings. Jason Borte will provide on-site coaching. He is a local professional, director of Atlantic Park Surf, and 2016 East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Inductee.

    The surf culture [in Virginia Beach] Borte who owns and co-owns the business, said: “This is huge.” WRV Surf Camp, said. “We have produced many great surfers. Atlantic Park Surf offers a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of surfers who are looking to get their name out there,” he said, noting that high-quality waves can be found on demand.

    Virginia Beach has been a surfing hotspot since 1912 when James M. Jordan Jr., a local teenager, paddled out with a redwood board brought back by his uncle from Hawaii, marking the beginning of East Coast surf.

    Today, the city hosts today’s Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships—the world’s longest-running surf contest—along with events like the Steel Pier Classic and Neptune’s Surfing Classic.
