Choice Hotels International’s latest sustainability report said that the hotel chain is committed to a sustainable future. report A carbon dioxide capture system at one of their locations has helped to reduce the gas emissions by 20%.
The company has over 22 brands and more than 7,500 hotels. It said that it had been testing technology at the Radisson Blue Mall of America Hotel for the last two years.
CarbinX is about the size of a pair of home refrigerators. Choice Hotels said the system cuts emissions by between 6 and 8 tonnes of Co2 each year.
Choice Hotels stated that the small-scale unit can reduce gas consumption and GHG emission by directly connecting to the water boilers of the hotel, thereby sequestering an important portion of carbon dioxide emissions.
Choice Hotels Reports the Scope 3 Emissions For The First Time
Choice has also revealed its scope 3 emissions.
Included in this are indirect emissions from the supply chain such as production, packaging, and disposal of furniture, cleaning supplies, laundry products, and food.
Choice accounts for 90% of the total emissions in a year, which is over 6,000,000 metric tonnes CO2 equivalent. It’s the equivalent of the yearly emissions from a medium-sized town.
Since many emissions are caused by suppliers who are not directly under the control of hotels, reducing them is a major challenge.
Some Choice Hotels now offer smart thermostats
Choice Hotels has announced that it has installed smart thermostats into more than 2,300 rooms of managed hotels.
According to the company, these systems reduce heating and air conditioning energy usage by up 52%. They also pay for themselves typically in less than two years.
Choice has made no public statements about climate change. Other hotel groups are aiming to be net zero by 2050.
“We have set ambitious sustainability targets and made long-term investment to positively impact the world and help drive business success.” In the report, Patrick Pacious, President of Choice Hotels said that they were working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create efficiencies which save franchise hotel owners money and time.
