    The U.S. Government Is Advising ‘Extreme Caution’ When Visiting This Popular Beach Destination—What Travelers Should Know

    Travelers should be extra cautious before visiting a popular Asian country famous for its beachesAccording to a government alert.

    The U.S. State Department issued an advisory of Level 2 for Indonesia recently, which means “exercise greater caution.” The U.S. State Department cites “terrorism” and “natural disasters” for its advisory. 

    The advisory warns that terrorists are continuing to plot possible attacks in Indonesia. “Terrorists can attack without much warning, and may target places of worship, police stations or hotels. They could also target bars, nightclubs, shopping malls, nightclubs or markets.”

    The State Department has also issued a Level 4 Alert for Central Papua & Highland Papua because of ongoing protests & demonstrations – and the potential kidnapping or abduction of foreigners. The advisory warns that the U.S. Government is limited in its ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. Citizens in Central Papua or Highland Papua due to the risk. U.S. employees who work in Indonesia are required to obtain special permission before travelling to these areas.

    It is recommended that travelers who plan to visit Indonesia travel cautiously and keep an eye on the Department of State to see if there are any changes. The scale goes from Level 1 to Level 4, with Central Papua (including Highland Papua) and Central Papua being the highest. 

    What does the U.S. Department of State issue advisories mean?
    The Department of State has issued four levels of U.S. Travel Advisory Tiers:
    Level 1: Normal Precautions
    Level 2: Exercise increased caution
    Level 3: Reconsider Travel
    Level 4 (Do No Travel)

    Not only the United States has issued a travel warning for Indonesia. Canada has issued a “exercise a high degree of caution” The alert was issued on April 22 and cited social tensions and potential unrest as the reasons. Canada has also advised its citizens to refrain from non-essential travel in the Papua area. 

    On the website, anyone planning a future international trip can access safety information regarding the country that they are visiting. Department of State’s website. The agency provides a free service known as the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, STEP or, provides timely alerts and traveler information. It also allows travelers to register their visit, so they can be contacted if an emergency occurs.
