Located across the street from the Maryland State House, 86 State Circle overtook the former 19th-century home of Alexander Randall, who served as the state’s attorney general. The original home has been transformed into a nine room boutique hotel, which still maintains the feel of a private residence.
The transformation was led by Severn Grove Hospitality Group, whose founders, Clinton Ramsden and Cody Monroe—both graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis—are deeply invested in preserving the town’s architecturally significant buildings. 86 State Circle joins their portfolio that already includes several historic Maryland capital hotels: 134 Prince, Flag House Inn. 1313 West.
Checking into 86 State Circle is like visiting a friend’s home—there’s no front desk (the innkeeper greets you upon arrival) and no keys (guests are given a code to access their room). The Black Pearl is the hotel’s speakeasy bar. It serves exclusively cocktails to guests.
The nine rooms, suites, and apartments are named after important figures in Maryland’s history. They include Edgar Allan Poe and Queen Anne. The townhouse has been restored to its original 19th century craftsmanship, with many of the details from the period preserved. These include the high ceilings, large windows, ornate moldings, wainscoting, and period millwork. The interiors have a spa-like feel, featuring neutral furnishings, matte metallics, ambient lighting, soaking bathtubs and heated bathroom flooring. As the hotel’s communal areas, the front porch and the double parlor located on the 1st floor are both inviting.
