It is hard to find a bar that compares with the best in Venice. Perhaps it’s because drinking on the water feels so luxurious. Locals start gathering at the bacari as early as 10:00 am to enjoy ombra or a small pour of wine with cicchetti, a bite-sized snack. You can start your evening at these standing-room-only watering holes or make a night out of it–just wear comfy shoes.
In Venice, walking into bars is like entering a portal through which you can travel in time. The 1930s are accessed through one of the doors, and this is where the Bellini was originally located. A wine bar unchanged since 19th century, with nostalgic bites. A third is a punk, divey past that you may have seen in Lower Manhattan in the 1980s. When in town you must try at least one spritz Veneziano, which is localized with Select bitter. But don’t stick to the Italian classics of aperitivo. There are many innovative cocktail bars, located in posh hotels as well as interwoven with the maze of canals.
