One hour’s drive from Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, leads to an unspoiled stretch of wild coastline in the island’s southwestern corner. Le Dune, an 28-room luxury hotel located on the ochre-pale sands at Piscinas Beach, is the focal point of this 29-mile stretch. The mining history of this desert-like region is well known. The hotel sits on the site of an old warehouse from the Ingurtosu Mine, which was one of Europe’s most important mines in the 19th century.

The interiors were redesigned by Antonio Gardoni & Luca Platto, who achieved a sleek and contemporary aesthetic, inspired by the coastal surroundings and industrial history of the area. The interiors are also a celebration of Sardinian craftsmanship. They feature the works of artists like Francesca Frau – known for her intricately wrought iron work – and Mariantonia Urru – who is specialized in exquisite traditional tapestries. The American Bar and Lounge is a perfect example of this thoughtful mix between old and new. Original stone walls, floors and a grand fire place harmonize beautifully with custom-made oak and wicker furniture, which are complemented by artisanal fabrics. Similarly, the rooms and suites thoughtfully introduce local elements: cast iron beds and white linens, synchronize with light, sand-tinted Orosei marble floors— while the walls are characterized by a bas-relief, tone-on-tone pattern that pays tribute to traditional Sardinian designs. Le Dune has two restaurants, Il Ginepro and Rosso Tramonto. The walls of Rosso Tramonto are painted entirely by Sardinian Artist Federico Carta. A gym, a spa and an outdoor pool are also available.

Address: via Bau, 1, località Piscinas, di, 09031 Ingurtosu SU, Italy
